Making Drapes and Soft Furnishings

Here are some points to consider when looking to make drapes, blinds and soft furnishings......

• Get a budget established before starting
• Use a reputable company specialising in soft furnishings
• When considering the design of your drapes give thought to the size of the room
• Often lifting the rods 100-200mm above the frame or even up to the ceiling will make the room feel bigger.
• Drape length can be a personal thing, whether you like them to the floor, or
• drapping on the floor. 
• Express your personality
• Not every room in the house has to have the same fabric or style. Enjoy your designing & buying experience.
• Comparative quotes
• If you get more than one quote make sure that you are getting "apples for apples". In other words, make sure it is the same fabric, lining, style, meterage, and tracking. You may find the dearer quote could be the "cheaper" quote if the same product was quoted on.
• Most importantly take the time to research your fabrics and drape makers or employ a designer (that would be me!) to specifie their recommendtions. This can make life a lot simpler and you'll probably end up savng money in the long run by getting it right the first time!

Interior design is a process where one can shape the experience of the interior space and manipulate its available volume. A small home can look bigger, if you just know how to utilize all the space and use the appropriate furniture and accessories. Actually, there are three basic guidelines for a successful interior design – whether your room is very small or very big. Interior design can only be considered successful if it is functional expresses a mood and exhibits a sense of harmony.

NZ industrial goodness from the Boiler Room Kingsland

Well it's been a very busy week on the home front renovations. We've polished back and blonded our Tawa floor boards in our living/dinning room, lounge, hallway, entrance stairs and kitchen. As you can see from the pics we were lucky that most of the floor boards were in good condition. We only had to replace about 6 of them.

'Details of Design' Tip: Pay your local demolition timber yard a visit if your looking for native hardwoods to repair your floor boards. I payed around $6 per meter for our Tawa. The price will depend on the type of wood and its condition.

We had to move out of the house for 3 days, which is always a trying time with young children. Fortunately my husbands parents were away so we moved into their house.

Moving all the furniture out and then back into the rooms is always a drag but you have to keep visualising the end result when you start to feel like your going insane!!! :)

............Now we're working on finishing the painting so the carpet can be removed and replaced! YAY, Bye Bye to nasty green 90's carpet!!!!!!
